On the Buisdorf weir (near Siegburg) there is a major control station at the head of the fish ladder. Migratory fish coming upriver are directed by a guiding rake into a holding chamber measuring around 10 square metres. In a control measure carried out daily, the catch is lifted by a crane so that the fish can be registered, generally being set free again after having been quickly tagged. Every year around 100 to 200 salmon are registered, as well as thousands of other species. The station is operated by the fish farmers of the Rheinischer Fischereiverband [Rhine Fisheries Association]. If you would like to take part in a guided tour in the migrating season – the autumn – you can register here.
